Hello everyone! I bought a iomega Zip Drive to transfer data to my LCIII. I followed the instructions of the iomega manual and no luck. Overtime I start macintosh 7.5 at my LCIII no iomega zip drive icon is displayed at my desktop.
The manual says that it should be 'Disk Tools 4.3' I have the disk inserted but no luck. The zip drive seems to work. I also cheked the SCSI cable connecting my LCIII to my Macintosh SE and it worked, I transfer a few files from one machine to another. So the cable is fine. Thats why im thinking that the problem could be the Zip Disc Tools 4.3. Is there ant place where I can download the driver 4.3 and install it with floppys? Thanks in advance!
Carlos, I have carried out a few simple tests with a Zip 100 (earlier PC-formatted, but since then Mac-reformatted) disk in a SCSI Zip drive connected to a System 7.5.3 PowerBook 540. It was not surprising to find that Apple HD SC Setup did not recognise the drive/disk.

Also, Drive Setup 1.7.3 could not handle the drive. However, Drive 7 and Lido formatting utilities worked fine. So, you will likely not need any special Zip software at all. From there it is easy to reformat a Zip (100) disk in a Zip drive connected to the SCSI port. Sometimes something like 'easy setup' or 'initialise' is used for the full operation. Often, an inserted (properly initialised) removable disk does not appear as it should on the Desktop.

In that case, a utility like Mt. Everything or SCSIProbe can be very useful. Just to be sure - you do have the SCSI Zip 100 drive and not the one designed for PCs that connects to a parallel port? The PC version has one female DB-25 parallel port (that's identical to a DB-25 SCSI port) and one male DB-25 parallel port.
The two buses aren't the same or compatible. The SCSI Zip 100 & 250 drives have a pair of black slider switches on the back of the drive between the DB-25 SCSI ports. One enables/disables termination of the bus and the other changes the SCSI ID from 5 to 6, whichever is preferable for your setup. The software that you need is IomegaWare, with version 4.3 being the last release for pre-OS X Macs. The 'Iomega Guest' program will let the Zip drive function, without installing the driver to the Extensions folder of the hard drive.

Could an associate with a Zip 250 copy these files onto a Zip 100 Formatted Zip 100 disk your associate's 250 drive can READ 100 disks (smart move on their part, since there are a LOT of those out there), though 100 drives can't read 250 disks. So i would guess yes, he can read and probably write those files unto a 100 disk for you using the 250. Worst case scenario, maybe he can burn a cd for you. For years i was saying that the zip drive was the greatest thing since sliced bread, but nowadays, with cdrs so incredibly cheap (less than a dime on sale here), it hardly pays to do anything else.

As an aside, bear in mind that if you go out a buy a Zip-250 thinking it will cover everything, you'd be right, except that you'll have to wait and wait and wait for it to read and write to Zip-100 disks. This issue made me decide not upgrade my old ZIP-100 IDE non-atapi drive. Instead I'm trying to get reliable CD-RW working since all modern PCs can read them. The only problem with that, is that there seems to be some serious problems with recent versions of Direct CD running under Win2000 and above. From what I hear InCD is not much better.

Hi Gerry, Primarily, look into prassi, no aspi is used (none in Win2k/WinXP). I used to use CDRWIN (for original CD creation). Isobuster is a 'must' to have on hand (freeware).
(uses their own methods to read/extract cd's, not ms's) CloneCD (if your CDR-W is.fully. supported) is cool. I agree that Nero is both excellent and sometimes makes a buggy CD. We have never burned even one coaster yet! (knocks on wood);) Thanks, but the original question and concept was to do with removable storage, NOT CD burning. For some reason every time I talk about it on a newsgroup people start assuming we're talking about CD burning. For CD burning, I actually use Easy CD Creator 3.5c with hacked registry. I also have never had a problem with it, no coasters, and it always goes at 12x even while playing Quake!
I love the way it automatically makes a cover for you too with all the tracks and times. However, as yet there appears to be not one single piece of software that can provide reliable removable storage using the CD-RW medium. CD-R is heavily limited; there's no API for a start and you can't reclaim space or synchronize filez. CD-RW is the future.

Does it work better than Direct CD though? It works with Win2k and WinXP, I tested 10 brands with 3 versions of each or more, and this was easiest and cleanest at time. CDRWin is fine as well. Is that drive letter access CD-RW software? I have no idea what the real problem is that you are having, or trying to do, I'm thinking just a configuration error. Perhaps details are within MS Technet or MSDN (?). IsoBuster reads and unpacks to HD ISO's from anywhere, perhaps a combination of utilities would solve your dilemma. Dear Group, i hope you can help me with this. I have access to a Win 98se computer in my office, however the computer has a program called 'PC Cure' loaded into it to prevent the machine being 'customised'. But, as soon as i re-boot,the PC Cure prog rolls everything back to how the IT administrator has set it up. My question is, to save re-downloading every time i want to use a program, would it be.

I know the disks are high, but a box would last forever. I back up my Money program after I get done with it, and it takes forever to back up to a floppy. Having read all the info about the Iomega 'Click Death' syndrome, I'm not sure if this is my problem or not. A few of my zip disks certainly seem to be not working now, and I'm afraid to put any of the others into my drive in case there's something there that might damage them too. Haven't noticed any obvious 'clicking', but it does seem to whizz around a lot longer than it used to, as though it's having problems reading or saving.

When the drive is empty it 'fakes' a partition sector that doesn't exist - like a fixed disk drive, and when it's not empty it returns sector zero - like a non-fixed removable drive.
